Watercolor painting relies on applying thin transparent pigments to produce delicate works of art. Today’s watercolor painting gives artists extensive freedom through experimental materials and innovative approaches. The American Watercolor Society permits multiple water-based media for entry such as egg tempera and acrylics alongside gouache and casein and water-based media but excludes pastels and collage from consideration.
Watercolor paints contain pigments that float in water-based binders which provides an excellent foundation for artwork development with real subjects. The artistic horizon of watercolor expands as artists expand their practice with mixed-media techniques to access endless creative capabilities. The combination of watercolor with pastel along with ink and collage elements produces an addictive artistic style that leads to energetic expressions.
Painting development occurs through the transformation of components and the combination of various levels of design elements and potentially the breakdown of original elements. The artistic process lets works generate their own dynamic and life force through this method. In a Community of Professional Artists you monitor your artwork development while assisting its transformation.
Our watercolor painting lessons include flat washes as the fundamental technique that students learn. To achieve this technique you need to prepare sufficient pigments then spread them onto a previously wet paper base. The painter applies the watercolor pigment onto a sloped surface by drawing overlapping horizontal stripes that start at the top and move downward. Let the wash mixture settle before paper drying occurs. You should avoid touching a drying wash because any intervention will produce undesirable outcomes.
Students can experience watercolor art through ART CAMP during the summer months.
